Poetry: Chapter Five
Super Moon
This night the moon demands attention,
now closer to us than any other time.
This gift happens twice a year they say,
Outshining the stars, more mysterious than the sun,
Suspended over Mt. Rainer like a halo–
It draws our eyes and we yearn.
Upon its arrival –babies are born,
while oceans pour over dry roads.
How many surprises have I missed, lost to concern?
How many ruby-red sunsets or violet bursting sun rises?
How many clapping thunderclouds with their displays of intense delight
have gone unnoticed as I fret
over this spot on my shirt.
See the old couple
walking into church hand in hand,
refusing to let go for the entire hour.
Now a tiny infant smiles
at each face with equanimity.
Here two girls on a park bench giggle
at something known only to them.
A young mother sits shoulder to shoulder
with her daughter, and helps her with her homework,
Smiling patiently, believing in her.
A caregiver sits silent on the bed
next to the old man wracked with pain.
An athlete falls back in the race
to run with a lone red-faced boy
As they cross the finish line together.
At the city pool a teenager with a deformed face
is embraced by his little sister and they smile.
Each super moon carries its own wonder
Showering the world in its own silver glow.
